Mindful Mourning - Winter 2025/26

Yoga for Grief Dallas Winter 2025-26 Newsletter

Hello, friends -

I was recently fortunate to attend a poetry workshop titled “Grief As a Sacred Invitation.” The workshop was led by my favorite poet, Rosemerry Wahtola Trommer, who many of you have heard me mention before, at the Kripalu Center in Stockbridge, Massachusetts. It involved a lot of travel time from good ol’ Dallas, and it was worth every second of the time I spent on the planes and the shuttle. The workshop surpassed my expectations and touched my soul in ways that are hard to articulate.

I had no idea what to expect, other than assuming it would be an honor to meet Rosemerry in person (it was). Aside from being a beautiful writer and a lovely human being, Rosemerry is a skilled facilitator. She consistently and clearly communicated expectations for our interactions with one another, created a space where everyone could feel a level of success, and paced the activities with a delicate precision. “You can’t do it wrong” was a phrase she repeated at many junctures, encouraging us to tiptoe into the waters of poetry with confidence, waters that were full and salty with tears by the end of the retreat.

In the spirit of continuing my new poetry practice and offering up a poem to the light, here’s one that I wrote on the last day of the retreat. It speaks to the ways that my yoga practice is deeply tied to my kiddo’s death.

Each time I step onto my yoga mat
And place my hands on my heart,
I feel you with me.
When I open into Warrior II
I think of you cheering me on.
“You’re a warrior bad-ass, Mom,” you might say.
And when I humbly bow,
I bow to your memory.
And when I stand in tree pose,
I think of your spirit blowing through my outstretched arms.
And when I fold forward, broken in half,
I know that I will rise again to mountain pose:
Sturdy, steady - until the next forward fold that threatens to break me in half again.
No matter how I twist or bend, I cannot change the facts.
But saluting the sun, hands to heart center,
I feel you there. And say thank you.

CJ Miller’s Spiritual Artist Podcast

I was honored to be a guest recently on The Spiritual Artist podcast. CJ Miller was kind to say nice things about my book (link below), and I’m always happy to talk about how I got into doing Yoga for Grief in the first place. Thanks in advance for giving this episode (and his many others!) a listen.

📖 The Yoga for Grief Workbook 📖

I wrote The Yoga for Grief Workbook to explain the ways that yoga can inform your grief journey. I used short vignettes about my personal grief experience to describe the ways that yoga helped me and why. Many people have shared with me that my book was very helpful to them - both for the “yoga stuff” and the “grief stuff” - and I hope it might be helpful for you as well. You can purchase my Yoga for Grief Workbook here - or, if you’re in the Dallas area, directly from me (email me for more info).
